What do I do in the event of an emergency?

Before there is an emergency at WCER, please familiarize yourself with the Educational Sciences Occupant Emergency Plan.

When calling 911

• Tell the dispatcher the location, including the building (Educational Sciences – 1025 West Johnson St.) and room number
• Answer all the dispatcher’s questions
• Do NOT hang up until told to do so
• Follow all directions given by emergency personnel

Criminal acts

• Acts in progress (intrusion, theft, acts of violence/threats of violence): Call 911
• Acts NOT in progress (vandalism, missing property): Call UW Police Non-Emergency 262-2957

In the event of a fire alarm or actual fire in the building …

Fire in the building:

• Evacuate area
• Pull fire alarm
• Use nearest exit or alternate safe route
• Do NOT use elevators
• Call 911 from the assembly point or a neighboring building
• Individuals needing assistance during an evacuation are encouraged to develop personal action plans and contacts in the building
• Stay 500 feet away from the building
• Do NOT return to the building until “all clear” is given

Fire alarm strobes:

• Evacuate area
• Use the nearest exit or the alternate safe route
• Do NOT use elevators
• Call 911 from the assembly point or a neighboring building
• Individuals needing assistance during an evacuation are encouraged to develop personal action plans and contacts in the building
• Stay 500 feet away from the building
• Do NOT return to the building until “All Clear” is given

In the event of a natural disaster or inclement weather …

Warning: Severe weather has actually been sighted in the area

Watch: Conditions are favorable for the development of severe weather

• Seek appropriate shelter (tornado shelter area or interior hallway)
• Stay away from windows
• Avoid large rooms
• Do NOT use elevators
• Monitor news and weather broadcasts

Parking

Parking on campus is notoriously difficult, and parking near Educational Sciences is no exception. Unless you have a permit to do so, do not park behind the building in Lot 92. The lot is monitored throughout the day and vehicles without a permit will be ticketed. After 4:30 p.m., vehicles that have a UW-Madison parking permit for any lot can park in Lot 92.

There is metered street parking near the building along Brooks and Mills Streets and paid hourly parking at Grainger Hall, but availability is not consistent. The closest paid parking that is not managed by the University is at East Campus Mall.

Deliveries/Pick Up

The address to the building is 1025 West Johnson Street, but there is no parking, standing, or stopping along the Johnson Street side of the building. When having food delivered or meeting a taxi for pick up, it is best to instruct the driver to go to the Brooks Street entrance of the building.

Area Resources

1. The closest ATM is at Grainger Hall.
2. The closest spot for coffee is Java Den.
3. Union South is west of Educational Sciences along Johnson Street.
4. Gordon Commons is east of Educational Sciences along Johnson Street.

The accessible entrances to the Educational Sciences building are located:

• At the corner of Mills Street and Johnson Street
• On the Brooks Street side of the building
• In the courtyard

Accessible restrooms:

• 2nd floor (M/F) — Additionally, an accessible restroom is in the classroom wing in the west hallway
• 3rd floor M — in the southeast corner; M/F — in the classroom wing on the west side of the building 
• 4th floor F— in the southeast corner 
• 5th floor, gender inclusive, individual stalls – in the southeast corner
  • Note: a Wiscard is required to enter the 5th floor
• 6th floor F— in the southeast corner
• 7th floor M — in the southeast corner
• 8th floor F— in the southeast corner
• 9th floor M — in the southeast corner
• 10th floor F— in the southeast corner
• 11th floor M — in the southeast corner
• 12th floor F— in the southeast corner 

Restrooms in Educational Sciences are primarily located in the southeast corner, next to the stairwell.

Gender inclusive restrooms are located on:

• Fifth floor — Note: a Wiscard is required for entry to the fifth floor

Women’s restrooms are located on:

• Second floor (Note: accessible restroom is in classroom wing in the west hallway.)

Wellness Room

There is a wellness room located in room 551W, that locks from the inside. The lock on the outside of the door indicates whether the room is occupied or not. This windowless room has a reclining chair, a table, and a dimmable lamp. Access to the 5th floor is only available to those with a Wiscard. Access to this room is available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Kitchens

Several kitchens are available for staff, students, and faculty in Educational Sciences to use. They include:

• Room 251 — located on the ground floor, adjacent to conference room 253. It has a refrigerator, microwave, and sink.
• Room 568 — located in the southwest corner of the floor, has a refrigerator, two microwaves, a sink, and tables and chairs.
• Room 785 — located in the Director’s Office suite and is open to all from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The kitchen has a refrigerator, microwave, sink, and a table and chairs that seat up to six people.
• Room 1151 – Located near the elevators, this kitchen is open to all from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. It has a refrigerator, microwave, and sink.

13th Floor

The 13th floor of Educational Sciences is an open, lounge-style space for study and collaboration. It is accessible by a stairwell and an elevator that is located in the southeast corner of the 12th floor. There is a men’s restroom located in the southeast corner.

The 13th floor is not designated as a quiet space, and staff are welcome to use the area for meetings that do not require technology. Note that there is a boardroom-style conference room with full technology support, including a computer, webcam, screen, projector, and conference phone. This is only available by registration through the EMS system.

All WCER conference rooms may be booked through the campus event management system with UW NetID credentials. Reservation status can be checked by logging into the system, clicking “Reservations,” and then “My Requests.”
