SoE Bridge Funding

Following the VCR announcement of a bridge funding program, SoE will partner with campus to provide limited funding to projects affected by federal cancellations or funding delays. Bridge funding is not insurance for grants under review. Campus will NOT accept direct requests from PIs or departments. All requests must be submitted through the SoE Office of Research & Scholarship. Requests are reviewed weekly by Dorothy Farrar Edwards, Hanna Blazel and Lauren Meyers. Funds are distributed soon after approval by Dean Haddix.

Bridge funding is intended for:

  • Interrupted funding of federal grants or contracts or delayed next cycle award notices. This includes interruptions or delays in receiving payments of federal subawards to UW–Madison.
  • Grant terminations with no current plausible pathway to alternative future funding, needs associated with safely winding down activities, or significant research benefits from a short-term infusion of funding (e.g., a longitudinal study nearing its end or a final data collection that will permit publication).
  • Eligible expenses include most categories of expenditures within federal grant and contract support, with an especially high priority given to projects supporting graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and projects from junior faculty with no flexible funding available. Up to six months of support can be requested, though requests should focus on the greatest needs and consider what reductions in originally proposed funding are feasible. Each request will be carefully reviewed and considered.
  • Investigators with significant available flexible funding will be considered lower priority; exceptions will be rare and determined by Dean Haddix.

The funding is not available for the following expenses:

  • Grant life cycle non-renewals
  • Payments to external subawardees
  • Faculty summer salary support.

At this time, it will be provided for up to six months.

  • Potential for current or future funding for the project
  • Source of lost/delayed funding related to the request
  • Budget details
